What is an ultrasound? An ultrasound scan is a medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. It’s also known as sonography.

A lot of the body's organs can be evaluated using ultrasound, which is a very safe and precise investigative instrument. To obtain images, ultrasound uses safe, high-frequency, inaudible sound waves. Both adults and children are not at risk from ultrasound waves.

In order to provide improved picture quality for medical diagnosis in a variety of areas, including abdominal, obstetrics and gynaecology, vascular, musculoskeletal, and other soft tissue parts of the body, Medscan Merrylands utilises the most recent imaging ultrasound technologies. Our sonographers and radiologists with specialised training are very skilled and knowledgeable in all areas of ultrasound imaging. PREPARATION

At your visit, remember to bring your recommendation (a letter from your doctor) as well as your Medicare and/or Pension Health Care cards. It is crucial to bring any prior imaging data pertaining to the area being examined. To ensure that there is enough time to complete the process, kindly arrive on time for your appointment.

You might be required to adhere to specific guidelines depending on the region being scanned. Keep taking all of your regular meds. Before your exam, you might want to prepare by consuming fluids or by fasting. When scheduling your appointment, you will receive all the necessary information, however we have included a summary below.

You must have a full bladder for ultrasounds of the pelvis, lower abdomen, kidneys, or bladder.

You must have a full bladder for ultrasounds of the pelvis, lower abdomen, kidneys, or bladder. Two hours before the scan, you must consume 600–800 ml of water and hold off on using the restroom.

Obstetric or gynaecological Ultrasound.
You must have a full bladder in order to undergo a gynaecological or pregnancy ultrasound. Two hours before the scan, you must consume 600–800 ml of water and hold off on using the restroom. When necessary, an internal ultrasound is carried out while the bladder is empty. This choice will be discussed with you by the sonographer.

Liver, gallbladder, or pancreas
You must fast before upper abdominal ultrasounds for the liver, gallbladder, or pancreas (i.e. no eating, drinking or smoking for six hours prior to the examination). If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor about this.

Musculoskeletal
Musculoskeletal ultrasounds (shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, hand and wrist, hip, thigh, knee, calf, ankle and foot) usually require no special preparation.

PROCEDURE

A hand-held probe is used to transmit and collect ultrasonic waves while it is moved across the area of the body being examined. There won't be any discomfort or pain. Typically, your procedure will last 20 to 30 minutes. The examination will be carried out by an expert who has received extensive training in sonography.

RESULTS

After your examination, the images from your study will be available on the Medscan Z-tech app. A report written by our radiologist, along with the images will be sent directly to your referring doctor. Medscan will store digital copies of all studies on our secure database for comparison with any future examinations.  All images are available online with the Medscan Z-link app()

Will I be exposed to radiation?

Can the sonographer check other areas I am concerned about?
No, the sonographer is only allowed to assess the area your doctor has specified. Any queries or worries you may have should be brought up with the sonographer since they could help with your diagnosis.

Can I eat before having a pelvic/obstetric ultrasound?
 Yes. Eating before your obstetric /gynaecological ultrasound is permitted. You are required to have a full bladder. It is necessary to drink 1l water 2 hours prior to our scan and hold.

Can I have a female sonographer/technician to perform the scan?
 Yes, kindly inform the front desk when scheduling your appointment. We employ female sonographers and radiographers who are aware of the demands of female patients.

Will the sonographer performing my scan tell me what’s wrong?
The sonographer's responsibility is to conduct the examination and guarantee that the images are of a high enough standard for the radiologist (specialist physician) to interpret them.
